Radetzky march was composed by J. Strauss in 1848. It was dedicated to the Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky von Radetz.
A March, as a musical genre, is a piece of music which was written for marching .
In this lesson we will strengthen the ability to feel the musical beat and learn about the music structure.
Please take a couple of minutes to watch the video by yourself and practice clapping by the beat of the March.Each claping is one beat!

Playing body percussions-music
Playing body percussion with the music
Introduce the body percussion cards to the kids without music and practice playing by the cards.
Put the music on and ask your class to play their body percussion by the beat and according to the body percussion card that you will show them.
Change the cards that you show the children during the music.
Second activity: Ask the children to stand in a circle and when you will say a name of a student, he/she will show the class how to play a different body percussion by the beat (do not use the cards).
You can suggest the children to play 2 body percussion at the same time like: stomping foot and clapping hands.

Understanding the rhythm notes
Tell your children that when we write words, we use letters but when we write music we use notes.
Introduce Ta
Say that Ta represents one sound in a length of one beat.
Sometime we want one beat to be silent and we use the Hus note.
Introduce the Hus
Say that Hus represents one silent beat.
Show your class the cards of Ta and Hus by turns.
When you show your class Ta, they will have to react to that card by saying Ta and clapping one clap.
When you show your class Hus, they will have to react to that card by saying Hus and opening their hands aside quietly.

What is a musical bar
The musical bar
In music we arrange the beats in groups.
Each group has one line at the beginning and one line at the end.
Each group is called a bar and usually each bar in the same music has the same amount of beats
In the above bar we have 1 beat with a sound and 3 silent beats:The total value of that bar is 4 beats
Sometimes the black lines are replaced with 2 lines and 2 dots from each side.It means that we have to play twice what is written between them(Even if it is one bar or a few bars)!

Please ask your children to read the following patterns. clap them and finally say how many beats have a sound and how many are silent:

At the beginning of each line you see the instrument that playes that line.
Arrange your class in three groups: Agroup that plays the rhythm sticks, a group that playes the triangles and a group that playes the drums.
You will be the conductor and will show them what to play.
Practice reading with out music and then playing without music.

The March refrain
Do you know that the March has a refrain?
Please watch the teacher tutoring video and notice that the part with the marching soldiers is repeating 3 times
The repeating part is the refrain.
Ask your class to sit in a circle.
Explain to the children that sometimes the composer writes a repeating part which we call a refrain .
In the Radetsky March there is musical refrain .
Tell the children that in the refrain you will ask them to roll the ball from one side of the circle to the other.
In the rest of the music you will ask them to give the ball to the child who sits next to them.
Ask the children to pay attention during the activity and count how many refrains we had in the march.
At the end ,ask the children how many refrain did they hear?-3
Ask your class for suggestions as for what to do in the refrain and in the rest of the music like: Walk in pairs and alone, change a seat in the refrain etc.

“Welcome to the” Kingdom of music” in which the melodies and the musical tones live peacefully together in unison.
I am the famous “Toys march” and together with me, in my clean and tidy house, lives my father “The Nutcracker march” and my mother “The Wedding march“.
We are the most famous family in the kingdom as we escort the king and the queen when they walk in the streets.
We, the March family, also take part in all of the official ceremonies, together with the soldiers and the policemen.
In our home, no body runs, no body dances and everything is being done in the regular beat of a soldier on his feet.
We love to arrange every thing at our home in straight lines including the Lego parts that I got as a present for my birthday.
March 3
“Today, in the afternoon, I invited my friend, the “Blue Danube waltz” to play with my new Lego and I can’t wait to meet her!”
An hour later, dancing and turning around with her wonderful dress, “Blue Danube waltz” approaches Toys March’s house.
For young “Blue Danube waltz”, it was very easy to turn around without getting dizzy.
Whenever she danced, she felt great, she felt free and she never forgot to count 1,2,3!
Blue Danube waltz” knocked on Toys March door three times saying:
“Hey “Toys March” do you hear?
“Blue Danube Waltz” is here!
I came to play with you and your new Lego!”
Toys March opened the door and said:“Welcome my dear friend, I am very happy to see you”

“Blue Danube waltz” while turning around and dancing.
“True” said “Toys March “:”I want you to know that in my home, which is the home of the famous March family, it is not allowed to dance or jump or run. In our home we allow our guests only to walk in the March pace.
As we take part in all of the official ceremonies of the kingdom, together with the soldiers, the policemen and the king family, we feel very important and we demand from our guests to honor us and walk in our pace.
“Blue Danube waltz” was insulted from “Toys March” and said:
"I am a great dancer and every one in this neighborhood knows it!”My family is also invited to the king’s palace!
Whenever the king wants to dance with his wife, he invites us so, we feel very important too!” said “Blue Danube waltz “and continued asking: “Why do you think that I have to stop dancing my waltz while playing with you? Why do I have to march like you?
“I am going home!” said Blue Danube Waltz and start dancing her way back home .
“Go home” said Toys March in an angry voice, “I will find another friends who will know how to respect famous March like me!”
“Blue Danube waltz “who heard Toys March’s words, said to him in a loud and clear voice:
“In our neighborhood we respect each other and accept each other! Why should I stop being Waltz and turn into March?

“Toys March" entered his home immediately to call his friend "Lullaby" who lived down the street .
He invited him to come and play with his new Lego .
He was pretty sure that "Lullaby" would respect the important March family and would agree to march like him!
"Lullaby" was very happy and accepted March’s invitation.

He was walking very slowly, singing quiet Lullaby to his teddy bear while holding his sleeping pillow.
He knocked very quietly on Toys March’s house and waited for him to open the door.
"Toys March", who was expecting him, opened the door and said:“Welcome my dear friend, I am very happy to see you”
“I am very happy to see you too” said "Lullaby"
” Where is your new Lego? Can we start playing together?”
“Well “said Toys March”Can I ask you a question before you enter my home?”
“Sure” said "Lullaby"
“Do you know my last name?” asked "Toys march"
“Yes I do! It is March…sh..sh., March …sh….sh..” said "Lullaby" while singing quietly to his teddy bear.

"Lullaby" was insulted from "Toys March" and said:
"I am a great slow singer and every one in this neighborhood knows it!My family is also invited to the king’s palace whenever the king has difficulties in falling asleep, so we feel very important too!” he said and continued asking:
“Why do you think that I have to stop singing my Lullaby while playing with you? Why do I have to march like you?"
"I am going home!” said Lullaby and start walking while singing very slowly and quietly to his teddy bear!
“Go home” said "Toys March" in an angry voice “I will find another friends who will know how to respect famous March like me!”
Lullaby who heard "Toys March" words, said to him in a loud voice: “In our neighborhood we respect each other and accept each other! Why should I stop being a Lullaby and turn into a March? “

"Toys March", who was very angry, entered his home and immediately called his friend "Rap" who lived down the street .He invited him to come and play with his new Lego .He was pretty sure that "Rap" would respect the important March family and would agree to march like him!
"Rap" was very happy to get "Toys March"’s invitation.

"Rap" approached Toys March’s home and said in a loud voice while stamping his feet:
"Hello my friend, I am here,I want to play and I am sincere!
"Toys March", who was expecting him, opened the door and said:“Welcome "Rap", my dear friend, I am very happy to see you!”
"Rap" was quiet for a second and then start dancing while reciting:
“Happy to see you my dear friend,
Playing with you is my intend,
Where is your Lego?Your new game?
Building together,that’s my aim!”
“Well “said "Toys March” Can I ask you a question before you enter my home?”
“Sure” said "Rap" and start clapping his hands.
“Do you know my last name?” asked "Toys march“
"March is the answer to your quiz,March, March that what it is!"Said "Rap" while dancing and using his body percussion!

True” said "Toys March": “I want you to know, that in my home, which is the home of the famous March family, it is not allowed to ran or dance or recite while using your body percussion. In my home, it is allowed only to walk in our March pace and we recommend doing every thing in straight lines, like the marching soldiers. As we take part in all of the official ceremonies of the kingdom, together with the soldiers, the policemen and the king’s family, we feel very important and we demand from our guests to honor us and walk in our pace.
"Rap" who was insulted from "Toys March" words start dancing and said:
“I like body percussions rhythm and sounds
I like rhyming words while dancing around
I bring to people a lot of fun
And I am the king’s favorite one!”
"Rap" did not want to change; he did not agree with Toys March’s demands and immediately, without even arguing, he start moving back home.

“I will find another friend who will know how to respect a famous March like me".
"Rap" who heard "Toys March" words, said in a loud and clear voice while stamping his feet and clapping his hands:
“In our musical neighborhood
We respect each other’s mood!
”Toys March" entered his home and "Rap" decided to visit another friend in the neighborhood.
The rumors about "Toys March" misbehavior spread all over the “Kingdom of Music” and no one wanted to visit him and play with him.
Even the holy music from the king’s temple did not want to be his friend and "Toys March" was very lonely.
March 13
In the next day he decided to play by his own in the nearest forest
It was boring to play alone so while sitting on the ground, he fell asleep.
In his dream he saw the trees playing with a colorful ball.The ball moved from one tree to the other and the trees where very happy.

”Can I play with you? Please give me the ball too!” asked "Toys March" in his dream
“If you want to play with us, you should be a tree!” said the trees
“Why?” asked "Toys March
“If you want to be part of our game, you must be planted” said the trees
“But I can’t be planted like you, I am marching with the soldiers, the policemen and the king family every week! Asking me to change my way, is not fair!” said "Toys March" in a sad voice.
